Son of Anthony and JoAnn Vrabel Swierz, Fr. Swierz was born in Youngstown and educated at Holy Family Catholic School in Poland, then attended Poland Middle and Junior High Schools, graduating from Poland Seminary High School in 1977.
After High School Fr. Swierz attended St. Gregory Seminary in Cincinnati until its closing, then attended the Pontifical College Seminary Josephinum, graduating with a B.A. in History. Fr. Swierz then attended Mt. St. Mary Seminary of the West, graduating with a Master of Divinity Degree. He was ordained to the priesthood by Most Rev. James W. Malone on June 22, 1985 at his home parish, Holy Family in Poland.
Fr. Swierz served a diaconate internship at St. Aloysius in East Liverpool. He served as an Associate Pastor at St. Peter’s in Canton, St. Rose in Girard, Holy Family in Poland and St. Christine in Youngstown. In the year 2000 Bishop Thomas Tobin assigned Fr. Swierz as Pastor at St. Joseph the Provider Church and School in Campbell. He took on the responsibility serving as Administrator of St. Elizabeth and St. John the Baptist Parishes, both in Campbell, as well as Administrator of St. John the Baptist Cemetery. In August 2011 Bishop George Murry appointed Fr. Swierz as President of St. Joseph the Provider School, Youngstown. Effective September 1, 2015, Fr. Swierz will become the Pastor of St. Patrick Church in Hubbard in addition to his duties as President of St. Joseph the Provider School.
Fr. Swierz is the Chaplain for the City of Youngstown Fire Department.
